March events for Brock students

|
|

March brings both post-midterm euphoria and pre-exam doom, leading students to usually have free time, yet constant stress. To give yourself a break from the constant back-and-forth emotions, several Brock events fill the calendar from the first week through to the end of the month.

Brock Pride Month

Brock’s Pride Month programming will run throughout March, beginning with the Pride Month Opening Reception on March 2 from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in RFP 214/215. The event will feature remarks from Brock students, staff and faculty, an overview of Pride events planned for March and an optional affirmation-writing activity for queer and trans Brock students. Coffee and refreshments will be provided, and questions can be directed to 2SLGBTQIA@brocku.ca.

Additional events include Heartstopper watch parties at the Student Justice Centre (TH253B) on Mondays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. from March 2 to 16, with three episodes screened each week, as well as snacks and drop-in time to connect with Brock’s 2SLGBTQIA+ program coordinator about campus resources.

Students can also visit Stick with Pride on March 12 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Thistle Chalkboard for free Pride stickers and pins while supplies last. There will also be pop-up button-making, colouring and origami sessions at the James A. Gibson Library/Learning Commons on March 18 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on March 24 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Posters, Pizza and Pride will take place on March 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in WH203, offering poster-making supplies ahead of the community march in downtown St. Catharines on March 31 for Trans Day of Visibility, with pizza available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests are welcome to register via ExperienceBU.

Protect your peace

For students looking to take a break and recharge, there are some events offering low-pressure ways to unwind this month. The Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies is hosting a movie night on March 2 from 7 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. in STH 201, with snacks and drinks provided. Attendees can vote on which film they would like to see after they RSVP.

On March 3 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Kenmore Centre Lounge (back of the Kenmore Centre), the Puppy Social will bring GTA Puppy Yoga to campus for a pet-and-de-stress session. Ticket details are available through BUSU.

On March 5, Mat Pilates and Matcha runs from 1:10 p.m. to 1:55 p.m. in the Fitness Studio. Then, on March 24 from 10 a.m. to noon, Tea and Colour Social will take place in WH305. Tea and colouring supplies will be provided, though participants are encouraged to bring their own mugs.

Arts and crafts

Students looking for hands-on creative breaks can choose from several arts and crafts events throughout March. The library is hosting March Paper Crafternoons as a drop-in wellness workshop on March 3 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and again on March 31 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Rankin Family Pavilion 214/215, with materials provided for activities such as collage bookmarks and pin-back buttons. Participants are welcome to bring their own photos or scrapbook items.

The Brock University Japanese Society is running phone charm making sessions with Japanese snacks and a photo option available for purchase. Sessions will occur on March 4 in GSB307 from 6:15 p.m. to 10 p.m.; March 5 in GSB306 from 4:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. to 10 p.m.; and March 6 in GSB306 from 11:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. Prices for this event are listed at $10 for a phone charm, $5 for a smaller bag charm and $5 for an extra photo.

For a free drop-in option, a DIY tote bag event will run in Pond Inlet on March 6 from noon to 3 p.m., with decorating supplies available while quantities last. Taylor Swift-themed friendship bracelet making will take place on March 11 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Pond Inlet. As well, Sip and Sew on March 25 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in South Block 201, where the Brock Needle and Thread Society is inviting students to decorate tote bags with embroidery.
