The Brock Badgers baseball team capped off a dominant season by capturing its fifth OUA championship, defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-0 in the gold-medal game on Oct. 11 at Welland Stadium.

Brock finished the season with a 15-3 record, completing an undefeated run through the OUA championship tournament from Oct. 9 to 11. The provincial title is the program’s first since 2014, marking another achievement for a team that proved they can win both high scoring games and tightly contested matchups.

The Badgers opened the tournament on Oct. 9 against the Queen’s Gaels, earning a 13-5 victory after being down early. Queens took a 4-1 lead after three innings, putting Brock in a difficult position early in its championship run.

The Badgers responded with a strong offensive performance, scoring 10 runs in the fifth inning to take control of the game. Designated hitter Flynn Matheson led the way with two solo home runs, while Catcher Gavin Taylor also contributed a home run. On the mound, pitcher Max Burroughsford earned the win, striking out seven batters across 5.1 innings.

The victory set up a matchup against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Oct. 10 with Brock facing the top seed from the OUA east division. Toronto entered the tournament as the defending provincial champions, but the Badgers left little doubt about which team controlled the game.

Brock defeated Toronto 18-1 in just four innings, ending the game with a mercy rule. The Badgers scored five runs in the second and added two more in the third before rallying together 11 runs in the fourth. The offensive outburst was a team effort, and Charlie Hughes earned the win on the mound. He only needed 55 pitches to get through four innings as the Badgers limited Toronto’s offence.

The dominant win sent Brock into the gold-medal game on Oct. 11 against the Laurier Golden Hawks. After scoring 31 runs across their first two tournament games, Brock needed to rely on its pitching and defence to secure the championship.

Pitcher Evan Marks delivered a complete game shutout, keeping Laurier off the scoreboard across all nine innings. Marks struck out eight batters without issuing a walk, helping Brock maintain control in a game where every run mattered.

The game remained scoreless entering the bottom of the third inning before Taylor provided a spark. Jack Shannon drew a leadoff walk and advance to third on a throwing error form the Golden Hawks. Taylor then hit a two-run home run to drive in the only runs of the game. With Marks and the defense closing out the game, securing the 2-0 victory and provincial gold for Brock.

Across its three championship games, Brock outscored its opponents 33-6, demonstrating the strength of both its offence and pitching staff. The Badgers showed they could overwhelm opponents with their bats while also relying on disciplined pitching and defence when needed.

The championship also ends a successful season for a program that had not won provincial gold since 2014. Brock’s performance throughout the tournament showed the team’s ability to respond to adversity, whether recovering from an early deficit against Queens or holding off Laurier in a low scoring final.

With the victory, the Badgers secured their fifth OUA baseball championship and finished the season with a 15-3 record. After a dominant run through the tournament at Welland Stadium, Brock has reclaimed its place at the top of Ontario University baseball.
