With deadlines creeping up for cumulative projects and exams looming around the corner, there are resources available at Brock to prepare for finals, along with events that allow you to take a break and hopefully avoid burnout as you cross the finish line and conclude the semester.
Preparing for exams
Learning Services is hosting targeted workshops to build exam skills. On April 2 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Library Classroom B, the “Writing Exams” session covers strategies for various question types, academic integrity, exam procedures, test-taking mindsets and post-exam reflection. Follow up with “Studying for Exams” on April 9 at the same time, in the same location, to explore preparation strategies for different learners and formats, as well as anxiety management.
Time to take a break
Take a breather from studying at the library’s “Unstudy Spot” in the James A. Gibson Library Learning Commons, which is available until April 21. The “Unstudy Spot” features colouring, crosswords, puzzles and sudoku.
On April 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in TH128A, Human Rights and Equity’s “Game and Break” drop-in offers board games and creative activities for wellness.
Studying is taxing on its own without an empty stomach, so make sure to stop by Brock Food4U’s “Pay-What-You-Can Pop-Up Produce Market” on April 2 between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at Rankin Family Pavilion. Fruits and veggies will be displayed for you to buy at the price of your choosing, with a suggested donation of $5 to support food security. It is recommended to RSVP, though that does not guarantee a spot; it is first come, first served.
Outside of Brock, you can savour Vietnamese culture at BVSA Pho Night on April 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at PHO THANH (165 Hartzel Road, St. Catharines). The event includes pho, spring rolls, games and prizes, with vegetarian and halal food options. RSVP is by ticket purchase, which must be purchased by the morning of the event.
Learning opportunities
Engage your mind with educational events. “Deep Roots, Quieted Stories: Black History & Heritage in Nova Scotia” will be held on April 1 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in TH253B. It is hosted by Student Justice Centre and Human Rights and Equity and will examine Africville and overlooked histories. It is recommended to RSVP; questions can be emailed to sjc@brocku.ca.
On April 6 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., the “Vibrations from Gaza” film screening and panel will take place in Sankey Chambers to discuss siege impacts. The event is free, though organizers recommend attendees RSVP.
On April 16 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., build practical skills at “AED 101” in GSB 206 to learn about what Automated External Defibrillator (AED)s are, how to use them and where they are located at Brock. Organizers recommend that those who are interested RSVP.
Explore A.I. research at “Mapping the Outlines of AI Research” on April 23 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Rankin Family Pavilion Room 216. Prospective attendees are advised to RSVP.
Volunteer opportunities
Students can volunteer at Brock Cares Day: Project Share Easter Egg Hunt on April 3 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Firemen’s Park, Niagara Falls. The event seeks to collect food donations and engage families. Transportation will be provided to and from campus, leaving at 9 a.m. sharp and returning at 2:30 p.m. Interested individuals must RSVP so that appropriate planning and preparations for the event can occur accordingly.
Join “Animal Sanctuary Volunteering Day” on April 18 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at The Ass Menagerie (12550 Daley Ditch Rd, Wainfleet) to care for rescue animals. Transportation will be provided to the sanctuary. Due to limited spots, interested parties should RSVP as soon as possible. Once your RSVP is submitted, you will be emailed a waiver, which you must sign and return to officially reserve a spot.

Good luck on your exams and hopefully you can squeeze in a few breaks!
