Are you looking to get involved in the arts community at Brock? Look no further!

For many students, the beginning of the fall semester is synonymous with the search for an extracurricular opportunity to get involved with. Between BUSU clubs, intramural sports teams and other university-funded programs, there is a large variety of options for interested students to choose from.

If acting, acoustic music or even watercolour painting is your thing, you’ve come to the right place.

Although Brock is not known entirely for its arts programs, the university has much to offer in terms of drama, music and visual arts. While it might initially be hard to find the perfect place to land, this list will help you narrow down a couple of different ways to get involved in the arts this year.

BUSU Clubs

This year, the Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) is helping to support over 100 student-run clubs. When it comes to the arts, there are a few different options to choose from.

If you are interested in musical theatre, give Brock Musical Theatre (BMT) a try. Every year, the crew over at BMT puts on a production, giving numerous students an opportunity to try their hand at acting and singing, as well as set design, lighting, costuming and even directing. While they’ve only just announced that this year’s musical will be Heathers, their previous two shows, Grease and Carrie, were an impressive display of the club’s prowess that suggests this year’s production will also be well-received.

For musicians and music lovers alike, Brock’s Singer-Songwriter Club (BSSC) is a great option. The folks over at BSSC hold weekly jam sessions, open mic nights and a music-centred talent show.

If you love movies, you should check out the Brock Moving Image Society. Last year, this club held various film screenings, produced their own film-centric newsletter and even worked on producing their own short films.

The Brock Creative Writing Club is great for writers who want to get involved with a community of fellow creatives, Brock Dance is an awesome team for those who want to get their groove on and the Brock Photography Club is the place to be for people who love to be behind the camera. These are only a few of the many clubs at Brock that can help you get involved with the arts on campus.

DART Mainstage:

Open to students enrolled in the Department of Dramatic Arts here at Brock, each DART Mainstage tells a unique story. Allowing students to hone their acting skills or build crew-related skills, these opportunities are an awesome way for those in the DART program to get involved with the arts.

The Brock University Choir:

Open to everyone, the university choir is a great way to have some fun and earn a course credit. All interested parties can sign up for an audition online, and if selected, rehearsals are held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts.

VISA Art Gallery:

Every year, the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts’ Visual Art Gallery holds non-professional exhibitions that allow students to showcase their work. More information about how to submit your work can be found online.

There are lots of options for those interested in the arts at Brock. While this list is only a snapshot of what the university has to offer, it serves as a great jumping off point for those who are looking to get involved but have no idea where to start.
