Brock students gathered at the annual Community Fair hosted by the Brock University Students’ Union this week, discovering student-run clubs, local businesses and community resources. and community resources.
Held at Weather Station Field on Sept. 8 and 9 as part of Badgerfest, the fair brought together everything an incoming Brock student would need to know. From education on what your student fees get you to highlighting many different options for rentals around campus, the fair was the place to be for every first-year student.
Brock clubs filled the field with booths promoting their organizations and upcoming events. Many groups had interactive activities to attract potential new members. Among these was Brock’s Quizbowl Club, which featured a Jeopardy-style trivia game. Other clubs such as She Creates Collective had representatives at their booth to introduce students to the club.
The Brock Badgers athletics tent also offered corn hole for students to play while learning more about the athletic events offered at the university throughout the term.
Other organizations’ tents were focused on connecting students with resources and services. Wellness Care Counselling was a prominent tent, showcasing their counselors’ cards for Brock students.
The transition to university is a big jump, and that can come with confidence drops and a larger strain on student mental health. Their booth gave students information and informed them that therapy under Wellness Care Counselling is covered under the student health plan.
The fair also featured live performances from Brock’s very own musicians. Julia Godden, Lucas Mason, Julia Wassenaar, Amanda Lyn Parker and Evan Rotella performed throughout the two-day event, providing music for students as they moved between booths.
The first day of the event saw students filling the field, stopping at booths to participate in activities and speak with representatives.
The second day was quieter as poor weather conditions affected the events. Fewer students came out to Weather Station Field — unwilling to fight the humidity and rain throughout the day — leading to some booths deciding to end their event earlier and begin packing up around 2 p.m., about an hour before the scheduled end time.
Despite the weather, some Brock clubs and organizations continued to show Badger pride staying throughout the afternoon and volunteering to interact with students.
For students looking to get involved, the Community Fair provided an opportunity to discover organizations and meet upper year Badgers through the club tents. The presence of local businesses and community services brought off campus life to students, giving them a taste of what the Brock community has to offer.
